Giants Vs Rams Review Week 7
Positives
Landon Collins
The first safety taken in the 2015 draft and rightly so. Landon Collins is playing out of his mind right he is on pace for over 100 tackles he has 2 interceptions one for a touchdown and 2 sacks. His play jumps off the film he brought the energy today and sparked the defense with his incredible pick six. He brought the wood all game with a combined 8 tackles he was always around the ball and all over the field. Landon Collins has kept this defense take a big step forward this season. Pro Football Focus is showing Collins some respect too with an 85.6 which has him ranked as the 4th safety overall. Here is a link to vote Landon Collins to the Pro Bowl
JPP,DRC and The Rest Of The Defense
Jpp made hustle plays all game he had pressures and made plenty of plays all game. He brought the energy the Giants needed on defense. DRC had 2 interceptions this game doubling the Giants turnovers coming into this game. DRC has been playing well this season he has been in position to make multiple interceptions this season but hasn’t been able to come down with them. Today was a different story he picked off Case Keenum twice and should have had a third. The Also Keenan Robinson was the one that batted the second ball that Landon Collins picked off. This Giants defense came into this game with 2 turnovers a and 6 sacks they had 4 turnovers and 3 sacks today. Maybe this is the start of something good with the defense.
Negatives
Larry Donnell
Where do I start with this guy. He is consistently a detriment to this team week in and week out. Whether he is missing blocks dropping easy catches or running out of bounds before the 1st down marker he hurts the Giants every week. This week he fumbled the ball on the second play from scrimmage and set the Rams up for an early lead.
Last week against the Ravens I don’t think he wanted to win.
This didn’t turn into a first down and some have dubbed it the softest play of the year. He ducked out of bounds to stop the clock and avoid contact when the first down and getting out of bounds wouldn’t have been any more difficult. He is just not good. I cringe every time he puts himself at risk by trying to leap defenders. My man Larry you are 6’6 you are not leaping over anyone. This needs to be Larry Donnell’s last year with the Giants.
Running Game & The Offense
I am not sure what has happened to the Giants offense. The passing game that was supposed to be has not materialized. The Rams were without top corner Trumaine Johnson and Eli only managed 196 yards. Eli played clean football though and made good quick decisions all game. The running game has become the larger issue here. If teams are playing two deep safeties to take away the big play the offensive line has to win at the point of attack and create lanes for the backs. The pass blocking is decent but the run blocking is abysmal and it has an effect on the defense and the passing game. The running game woes are nothing new though the Giants haven’t had a 1,000 yard rusher since Ahmad Bradshaw. The Giants need to figure out a way to stick with a back for 20 carries and I dont think its Rashad Jennings. The Giants would be better served running the ball with Paul Perkins who looked good on today but struggles blocking. Whatever they do they need to figure it out during the bye because the Eagles are up next and they are playing lights out defense. If we try to pass 35-40 times against the Eagles Eli will pay.
Overall
The Giants got by with their defense in this one. Landon Collins put himself in the conversation for DPOY with his game today. The three levels of defense played well as they even bottled up Todd Gurley. Spags has the defense playing well now if the offense can come around this team can be dangerous.
Up Next
The Giants are on a bye week then they come back for a huge tilt against the Eagles. Its simple if they run the ball they will win if not they will lose. Giants killer Connor Barwin will be there and he must be accounted for.
