FINALLY! McAdoo and Resse, You’re Outta Here!
Well, Ben McAdoo will now have plenty of time to, “look at the tape,” because Ben McAdoo has been fired as the head coach of New York Giants, and Jerry Reese is following in his wake. Amen! It feels as if the storm clouds have parted and a ray of sunlight has shined through. Yet there is still plenty of the storm remaining for this team to get through, but this move may have come just in time for the 2-10 NYGs.
The arrival of McAdoo was always an omen. Whether it was good or bad omen had yet to be seen, but it was an omen for sure. A west-coast minded OC whose offensive principles were a far cry away from Kevin Gibride, and from the onset it looked like it had potential. McAdoo was running the offense, and Coughlin was still the head coach. While the team was not getting the Ws (queue the late game blunders) the potential for a high-powered offense could be seen as OBJ broke onto the scene as an all-world talent. Yet Coughlin would lose his HC job in what seemed like a pre-meditated 2 year plan to get McAdoo in as the new offensive minded genius. Coughlin leaves, Eli cries, McAdoo is in. Here we go.
We all know how the first year under McAdoo went. Reese invested heavy on the defensive side of the ball by grabbing Jenkins, Harrison, and Vernon who would immediately come out to prove they were worth the money while Landon Collins broke out as an All Pro talent. Things were going great. 11 wins and a wild card birth for a rookie HC is one hell of a way to start a career, but one could not help but wonder if TC could have done the same or more with new defensive Toys.
Queue 2017.
The Giants have arrived. Pre-season favorites to win the East and legitimate contenders to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Eli vs Brady Chapter Three, let’s go! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! So wrong. What’s worse is it was so clear from the beginning of the first pre-season game. The offensive line looked like a complete mess. The running game was non-existent. The defense looked sloppy. It was okay though, because the starters were just warming up, and we HAVE to wait until pre-season week 3. Uh-oh. OBJ takes a cheap shot to the leg, and it looks awful. He’ll be missing some time. Its okay though, we have B-Marsh and Sterling.
It did not look good from Week 1. The offense could never get in rhythm. The Giants started each game from behind, and the absence of OBJ was clearly felt. Loss, Loss, bring on Philly! OBJ is back! And back he was as OBJ would catch 2 ridiculous TDs in the last second loss to the birds (who would go on to be one of the best teams in the NFL). The G-men would go on to lose two more games before OBJ would lose the remainder of his season to injury. The Giants are 0-5, and OBJ, B-Marsh, and Sterling Sheppard are out.
It was already clear here that this coach was a lame duck. He was never good. His 2016 season was a mirage cast by a 100 million dollar defensive investment and a pro bowl talented roster. His success as an OC was predicated on the arrival of an all-time talent in OBJ. What did he become when some of these tools that were once so reliable began to falter? He looked for an outlet to place the blame. Enter 2x Super Bowl winning and Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning.
McAdoo began assigning the blame to his Quarter Back “We’ve got a veteran Quarter Back who should…” BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH Benny Boy. You turned your blame on the one guy you knew was too much of a man to fire back. Who had too much quality as a human to say you were the problem. You ran your mouth about the only guy you weren’t afraid to talk about because he wouldn’t talk back. Big problem to your plan McAdoo, Eli has NEVER needed to talk back because Eli’s quality has always spoke for itself, and when all this culminated with Eli being benched that quality showed itself in spades. Eli didn’t need to fire back because Big Blue Nation was there to fire for him, and Mr. Mara who seemed to have forgot himself for a moment was reminded of what organization he was charged with running by his late, great father. No more mucking about with these losers. Time for a change
SEE YA! After an embarrassing loss to the Raider with Geno effing Smith at the helm, the Giants fire HC Ben McAdoo and GM Jerry Reese. The move comes at a pivotal time, and while it is too late for this season, it is just in time to shape the future. Spags steps in as the interim coach, and while his Win/Loss record with the Rams is nothing to write home about; we know he has better feel for the city of New York than McAdoo could ever have. Spags and Mara may be able to salvage a relationship with Eli Manning to help build this thing to the future if Mr. Mara is willing to put aside his pride.
The Giants are in a key point of preparation for next year with the senior bowl coming up and some of the big names coming out of this year’s QB class. We are all thinking about the big ones: Rosen, Darnold, and Mayfield and which the Giants will look to draft. Yet there is still next season to consider, and while you’ll likely be drafting the QB of the future, is it out of the question to keep the proven vet around to help bring the new kid along? The Eagles and Rams have shown us that the young top guys can still take time to find their way and don’t all come out lighting the league on fire. The new HC and GM could come into this situation seeing a plethora of talent with a top draft pick in next year’s draft. It is not too crazy to think they could draft the QB of the future while keeping a focus on winning in 2018. To do that, they may need Eli.
Where does it all go? It is almost impossible to say right now, but one thing is for absolute certain… The future today, is a lot brighter than the one on Sunday.
Ben McAdoo just lived every High School movie plot where the lead role gets a new look/friends and forgets where he came from only to have it all fall apart pic.twitter.com/5u0wrgB3ir
